Two killer breweries teamed up on a perfect sun-and beer-soaked day at the historic Scoot Inn on Austin’s Eastside for Austin BugOut, an unofficial SXSW showcase on Tuesday, March 14, 2017. Although Night Beats were originally scheduled to play, their last-minute cancellation gave the sideshow performers Kitten Rainbow Surprise an extra hour to fill with magic, face-impaling, and other oddities. With plenty of Independence and Lagunitas beer to fuel crowds, nobody was complaining.

After cancelling a much-anticipated showcase on Monday night due to weather-related travel delays, fans at the Scoot Inn were eager to catch Lizzo’s performance on Tuesday. Getting plenty of airplay on local Austin radio, Lizzo’s cheeky lyrics drew the crowd in, but it was her and her stage dancers choreography that got the crowd bumping.

California’s Thee Oh Sees provided a nice contrast to Lizzo performance with their high-energy psych garage rock featuring the face melting of guitarist John Dwyer, and a solid rhythm section of two drummers and a bassist. Their only performance at SXSW 2017, the crowd responded enthusiastically by tossing beer cans and cups in the air as Dwyer jousted and writhed around with his thick clear Lucite guitar. A perennial favorite of SXSW, the Lagunitas showcase did not disappoint and returns for day two on March 15th, with Sylvan Esso and Bleached topping the bill.
