Waking up in time to play a show at noon on a Friday during a major music festival hardly seems like a very rock and roll thing for any band to do, let alone when you are a member of the band FIDLAR. With song titles that vary from “Cheap Beer,” to “Cocaine,” to “Wake Bake Skate,” one might wonder how the guys from LA might manage to keep it together through a normal show played in the actual darkness of night.

Coming off a solid opening performance at Austin City Limits Festival 2013, the guys proved they are more than just partying punk rockers who love skateboarding, beer, Del Taco, and writing songs about said subjects.

So, you guys don’t seem to be much of a festival band.

Yeah, this is pretty different than what we normally do. This is how we get in trouble, though, having the rest of the day to roam around.

There is definitely a reoccurring theme in your songs about being bored and how some of your adventures — or misadventures — occur.

This is where we found our love of social media and starting posting homemade music videos on YouTube, back when we started in 2009. Honestly, our stupid video for Friskies [cat food] just proves how dumb we can get with the Internet sometimes. Also, there is a gem of a video there in YouTube land that features an opening scene of Henry Rollins. Really, we just like fucking with people while reaching as many people at one time as possible.

Garage rock? Surf rock? Punk Rock? Party rock? Who is FIDLAR?

Straight up, we are a rock band. We make the music we make, and take influences from the various music we like and listen to, whether it’s folk, country, or punk.

Now you guys are on Mom + Pop Records, how are things different in your daily lives?

Well, we have the freedom to continue to record our music, which we still record ourselves; Mom + Pop is cool with that. So really, we just spent their money on touring in an actual tour van. And don’t get us wrong, we are still broke! If we could pay our bills in street cred, then we would be set for life.
