YOUTH FUNERAL – See You When I See You

Youth Funeral "See You When I See You"Youth Funeral can be labeled as a “screamo” band, but doing so puts a misleading label on them. Sure, there is a lot of angry and passionate screaming on this EP, but there is also a level of musicianship and musical smarts on display, that stretches the music beyond rote post-hardcore. In addition, they play these songs with a level of viciousness, which is missing from a lot of bands in this genre. They also know how to make the most of their time, packing all 11 minutes of this EP with the types of twists and turns that take most bands double or triple the time.

“Vultures” opens with 50 seconds of urgently played post-hardcore. “Confidante”, which is the longest song on the record, follows and weaves in parts of calm among the storm of chords. “I Remember” slows it down to a mid-paced, noisy gait. “When It Pours” is another, fast and loud scorcher, while “Weak But Warm” merges in viciously played odd-time parts that verge on math-core, along with more subdued passages. The title track goes a little farther down the math-core hole, and features some start/stop rhythms before ending abruptly.

See You When I See You is an excellent slab of post-hardcore invective. It may have a short running time, but there two positives to be drawn from this fact. First, the album is all killer and no filler, and second, because of the first reason listed, you’ll want to play this record again once it’s finished.
