To say Xiu Xiu is an acquired taste is an understatement. Working with a revolving door of artists, Jamie Stewart has continued to release a steady flow of albums that are full of rhythmic beats, various sounds, original vocals, and songs that walk a fine line between brilliant and offensive.
With the latest release, Always, not much has changed. Each song is a look into Stewart’s emotional nightmare as he tackles subject matter that is dark and, at times, morose. Murder (“Gul Mudin”), suicide (“Hi”) and abortion (“I Love Abortion”) prove that nothing is off limits. What makes these songs tolerable is the synth-driven, almost pop-sounding rhythms that accompany each tune. You get the feeling Stewart wants to drag the listener into his depraved world, but he wants them to enjoy the ride.

This music is not for the faint of heart, nor the average music listener. If you like songs that make you think or are searching for something deeper than the flavor of the month, then give Always a listen. Otherwise, stay away, because you may not like where it takes you.
