Like the static in between radio stations, a person’s initial reaction to the disorganized, fuzzy, throbbing noise is often irritation and annoyance. Occasionally, the whisper of a distant opera or talk show will beat a couple decibels through the fog and fade in and out with reception. In reference to Tobacco, the new album Maniac Meat is not unlike the emptiness between stations.
The experimental album mixes and matches elements of psychotic, fuzz, and melodic dance pop to make the heaviness that underlines the entire record intriguing. Imagine your favorite techno beat. Now, add some collected chaos and your finished product is Maniac Meat. In time, perhaps the overall effect gains a perspective of thoughtfulness — but in time.

From top to bottom, the record rolls with pounding, clashing, roaring, and stomping. It’s only the plentiful distortion and that makes you feel safe from harm — oh, well that and the cooler, synthed vocals that waft in and out of focus (not to mention a couple guest appearances from Beck…).
So what are we left with in the end? A well put together collection of electronic noise and sounds that could completely reverse a mental state. Put that aside; the variation is in the detail and the entire album can blend into itself. By the last track, you are aware just how tired you really are, but still, it was a fun run, wasn’t it?
