THE VULTURES – Chingus

ChingusOh man. Fuck. I’m sorry. This record is pure gold like King Tut’s shit. If urban asphalt had waves and curls in it, this would be the tarmac surfing background music. Sounding like they were influenced by the likes of The Ventures, a bit o’ sludgy metal, a whole slew of punk bands, some Zorn-like spy/jazz elements, a pinch of hot rod rock, garage-y aggression and more than a few cans of beer, this trio’s disc is what needs to be played at every pool session or house party from now until your mom calls your ass in for dinner. I’ve actually seen these guys live, and so much of their set is improvised and driving balls-out fun. So getting that vibe and element on a studio recording, I thought, would be near impossible. I was wrong, thank God. It’s musically tight and unfaltering, and it drives hard like Jesus late for dinner.

Opening track “Go” moves. “Alcohol” is exactly what a thick, cheap whiskey drunk sounds like. Even slower tracks like the Melvins-esque “Dreaming” fits in nice with the faster tunes. A completely solid album. And it comes in limited vinyl copies so get on it.
