THE OATH – S/T

The OathThis project — which features the core duo of guitarist Linnea Olsson and vocalist Johanna Sadonis, joined on their debut by bassist Simon Bouteloup and drummer Andrew Prestidge — play a darkly charismatic, punk/metal hybrid that is full of blood, sweat and life. It is also very catchy and anthemic, and rocks like nobody’s business.

“All Must Die” opens the record with a barnstorming and slightly primitive riff from Olsson, with the rhythm section laying down a dangerous groove, right before Sadonis makes her presence known with some attitude-laden vocals. Soon the bottom drops out and a evil-sounding minor key riff rings sending chills down your spine before it returns to the main riff and a twisted solo to end. It’s quite the opening salvo.

From there, “Silk Road” has a dark ’70s hard rock vibe to it, like The Runaways meet Danzig. “Night Child” is an anthem dedicated to those who live for the excitement of the night and all the thrills it provides. For these women, it could be about being in a band, or it could be about anybody who walks a different path.

In a way, these they are channeling the crazy spirit of their home base of Berlin, Germany into their music. Sadonis is a native, while Olsson is a Swedish ex-pat. This love for the night life of their city could be read into the song “Silver And Dust”, where Sadonis sings the “streets are paved with magic”. But like any good rock song, it could also be about anyplace where the night holds promise for people.

Sadonis shows an adept touch on the slow-burning, semi-ballad “Leaving Together”, where her vocals alternate between tough and tender. “Black Rainbow” is lean, speedy metal, while “Death Delight” is a another blast of dark, energetic hard rock.

This is quite the debut. People who like their metal a little primitive, catchy and with a dash of punk rock attitude will find much to like on here. They bring the rock and a sense of lively darkness to metal.
