Pastel is the precursor to upcoming long-player, Girls Come Too, from Toronto five-piece, Still Life Still. With luscious undertones of fuzz, disjointed riffing, and reverb-doused vocals, it comes as no surprise that Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene) played a hand in producing, along with Martin Davis Kinack (also a BSS producer).
Assimilating elements of shoegaze, math-rock, and dream-pop, Still Life Still is the kind of discovery that will earn you serious cred with the art school crowd. Although shooting its wad after just three tunes, Pastel is a gratifying listen for all 10-and-a-half minutes. Pardon the sexual allusion, but bedroom references are characteristic of SLS; from album titles (Girls Come Too? Hello!) to song lyrics, “I wanna make you come/Let’s talk more about what you want,” from “Pastel.”

Still Life Still is a wholehearted recommendation for fans of Evangelicals, Asobi Seksu, and the entire Broken Social Scene extended family. This EP leaves little to be desired and certainly, Girls Come Too will fulfill those desires when it releases at the end of August.
