Set Your Alarms Early for Record Store Day

Friday, April 16th, 2010

There’s about a million limited edition special releases coming out tomorrow (many of which will be sold out before you finish your second cup of coffee), and nearly every remaining record store on earth will be hosting some sort of special event. If you want to find out what’s going on near you, visit the “Venues” page at the Record Store Day website.

A few notables to note:

* The two largest independent music chains in the US — Newbury Comics (New England) and Rasputin Music (Bay Area) — have a ton of releases, deals, and performances at their various locations. Newbury will be offering 30 percent off all used CDs and DVDs, and 20 percent off all vinyl records, as well as $6.00 picture disc vinyl records from The Clash and the Ramones (available to coupon holders if you subscribe to their newsletter — you may be able to search around on their site and find the coupons).

* Sub Pop wins the award for “Label Putting Out the Most Stuff for Record Store Day,” releasing limited edition vinyl from the likes of Beach House to Soundgarden. Here’s a handy link to a page on their website that gives you a complete list, press runs included.

* The Flaming Lips have been getting a lot of press for their highly anticipated vinyl single: a psychedelic punk version of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon,” which featuring guest appearances by Henry Rollins, Peaches, and Stardeath and the White Dwarfs. Wayne Coyne made an astute observation, stating in an interview with Spinner, “Back in the day, every day was record store day…Now it’s a very strange phenomenon — ‘Ooh, there’s one day where you go to the records store.'”

* Gypsy punks Gogol Bordello have a special seven-inch record coming out, and even recorded a special message:
