SEIZURES – The Sanity Universal

Seizures "The Sanity Universal"Seizures play a technical style of hardcore that draws from other forms of music such as metal, noise rock, and prog. In a way, what they play is progressive, but more in intent, not necessarily in sound. Time signatures are shredded, and the sound verges on chaos — but that’s the point, and that’s what makes it so exciting. Seizures draw on such torchbearers as the Dillinger Escape Plan, Coalesce, and Botch — all bands that expanded the parameters of hardcore and were equally loved and scorned for pushing boundaries.

But instead of being just a copy, Seizures take inspiration from these past bands and create their own glorious noise. They put their own stamp on hardcore, imbuing their scathing, complex, and hard-hitting sound with a ton of personality.

The band originally released The Sanity Universal on their own about a year ago, but thanks to Melotov Records it’s getting a vinyl release, complete with a remastering job by Chris Common. For a band like this, fidelity matters, and the new mix gives the album the right amount of clarity and grit.

If you are in the mood for some hardcore that doesn’t follow the standard blueprint, you will find much to like on this record. It will also appeal to anybody who just loves loud, aggressive, and boundary-pushing heavy music. This is only Seizures’ second proper full-length, and it will be interesting to see where the band goes from here.
