SCATTERED TREES – Sympathy

This is so college-friendly that it’s a bit surprising it isn’t all over the radio yet. This doesn’t mean it is the catchiest thing in the world, it just means that it’s very well-formulated music which takes a lot of the best parts of radio unfriendly bands from the past and mangles them into something that DJs (and, apparently, EMI) have a lot of faith in.

Sound negative? It shouldn’t. This may be awfully radio-ready (especially tracks like the uber-catchy “Four Days Straight”) but it’s also really quite good. It’s not the definition of mainstream — it’s just that it could be enjoyed by those who are. It could also be enjoyed by anyone who appreciates a good ol’ fashioned psychedelic organ breakdown, some ’80s-style choruses, and anyone who ever loved Built to Spill. Plus, the album includes a five-minute and three-second song titled “Five Minutes” — that’s a win no matter how the song is, and a big winner when it’s talking about writing for five minutes at a time. Until they end up on the radio, this is one that is worth searching out on your own.
