Rock Music: A Tribute to WeezerOriginally published in Verbicide issue #5

There are two categories of songs on this compilation: One from bands that try a little to hard to sound like Weezer, to the point where I questioned, “Is this a band covering Weezer, or is this Weezer themselves?”; two being songs by bands who take their own style and completely change the song around.

Grade takes “Surf Wax America” into their style of melodic hardcore and adds a screamy chorus. Christopher John (Elliot) slows down “The World Has Turned and Left Me Here” with soft vocals and piano making it a really calm and quiet song. The Ataris cover “Butterfly” and it is as close to the original as you can get. “Only In Dreams” is my favorite cover by Mock Orange. They add more guitars and the overall song is faster and more chaotic. Other bands on this compilation include Piebald, Affinity, Glasseater, Further Seems Forever, Midtown, Dashboard Confessional, The Impossibles, and The Stereo.
