So much has happened in the world since the last time I saw Jello Biafra doing spoken word, and I was eager to hear what he had to say when Jello Biafra and The Guantanamo School of Medicine took to the stage. But first, the fashion.

Jello started off wearing a big red and black checkered coat, complete with fur trim, and as the songs went on, the clothes came off. Underneath the coat was this funky button-up with bright pink, orange, and green plaid shapes and tassels printed all over it. The next two layers were t-shirts: a campaign-style “Manning/Snowden ‘16” and “Fuck the Tea Party.” Excellent!

Between the stripping, erratic dancing, newer songs, and immortal Dead Kennedys hits — including a modern take on “California Über Alles” (swapping in Schwarzenegger and the NSA) — Jello talked about the “real” enemies we’re facing, the differences that could be made if the rich just paid their fair share of taxes, and how the way to change things is not to simply dismiss Tea Party fanatics, but to talk with them. It was great! I felt like I was 19 again, ready to change the world!

By this point, the crowd had doubled, and folks were ready for Turbonegro. This band has some of the most loyal and dedicated fans. There were Turbojugend from all over the land, eager to hear their Norwegian death-punk heroes. So much denim! So many sailor hats! This was my first time seeing Turbonegro, and they didn’t disappoint.
