The second day of PRB started off with local folk-punk band, Eliza Battle, and the Bay Area’s Get Dead. Both bands had great stage presence and got the crowd moving under the hot sun.
Just a few days prior, I had heard some good stuff about Pears, the New Orleans-based band that recently got signed to Fat Wreck Chords, and they were worth the hype. Good ol’ fashioned melodic hardcore punk with a twist of metal. They’ve been touring with Strung Out and will be on the road with Teenage Bottlerocket this fall. Looks like they’re getting some well-deserved recognition.
After a few years of rockin’ the nighttime club shows, I was so happy to see the legendary Muffs on the main stage. Kim Shattuck, known for her awesome screams, has one of the best, most recognizable voices in pop-punk (or “obnoxious ponk” as she called it, and yes, Kim, you did look cute in your Wednesday Addams dress. Side note: What was Frank Black thinking?!).
With grandpa sweater-wearing guitarist Ronnie Muff and Roy McDonald pounding away on the drums, they always put on a really fun show. I know they had a new album out on Burger Records last year, but they still played some of the classics, like “Oh Nina” and their “Kids in America” cover (come to think of it, Clueless was channeled at least twice during PRB: The Mighty Mighty Bosstones had played the day before, and was the surprise guest at the English Beat club show at the Bunkhouse that night!).
Just a few songs into their set, the guitarist from Pears walked onto the stage, talking about how he was excited to see The Muffs because his girlfriend had first introduced him to the band, and then he proposed to his lady right then and there! Love was in the air!
