Stepping out of the shadows of Robin Pecknold and Fleet Foxes, Christian Wargo and Casey Wescott have assembled the band Poor Moon, bringing along Ian and Peter Murray for the ride. Their self-titled debut album is a collection of sparse tunes that heavily rely on the folk-infused music that the Foxes have championed. The album contains its ups and downs, but as a whole it listens very well. Songs like “Holiday” and “Pulling Me Down,” which delivers a mellow ’60s vibe, highlight this collection of songs. The track “Waiting For” may be the best song on the record, delivering psychedelic guitars, thumping rhythms, and Wargo’s haunting vocals for the listener’s ears to absorb.

Not everything on the album is worth discussing, as some tunes seem to meander and lose focus, but overall the music on Poor Moon is pretty damned good. If you are expecting a Fleet Foxes album, don’t — the debut from Wargo and Wescott successfully breaks away from the Foxes and establishes them as formidable songwriting team.
