For the month of November, Red Bull Sound Select hosted #30daysinLA which consisted of nightly shows featuring an array of artists. Day number 29 out of 30 was hosted at Mack Sennet Studios in Silverlake. This multi-functional video production, photography and event space is absolutely beautiful. It is housed in a 1916 building and despite its age, stands in pristine condition. It has succeeded at blending an antique, contemporary, and industrial feel all together while remaining warm and inviting to its guests.
Though Chet Faker was the centerpiece of the night, one must give a neck breaking nod to the openers Denitia and Sene. This Brooklyn based group offered a blend of moody R&B-esque melodies with a dash of pop from both singers. Denitia hit the room with her soulful voice, offering an undertone of mildly-raspy sultriness. Sene handled the beats and primarily accompanied Denitia with backing-vocals, but proved he could stand alone with his crooning tenor. Once you pair them together over some entrancing mid-tempo beats while a third member adds texture, you reach the sound of sculpted minimalistic perfection.
In an era where one must retain a healthy dose of skepticism in regards to live sound, they held ground. They put on a solid show and succeeded at clinging to my brain 24 hours later. What I’m really trying to say is, I caught myself singing “Casanova” and “Divided” in my head at 3 a.m. late Sunday night. So please take my word and take a chance; if you have a few minutes stream Denitia and Sene’s music, and definitely pay them a visit next time they are near you.
