NATHEN MAXWELL AND THE ORIGINAL BUNNY GANG – White Rabbit

reviewed by Christopher Connal | Friday, October 2nd, 2009

White RabbitTo Flogging Molly fans, Nathen Maxwell is the bass player who lends his voice to “Queen Anne’s Revenge,” one of the louder and faster songs by an often loud and fast band. On White Rabbit, a 10-track album of material written over the past 10 years, listeners are exposed to a different side of Maxwell’s music.

The album features a reggae bass-line throughout, with acoustic guitar and melodica on most songs and has a mellow feel overall — almost reminds me of Sharon Shannon’s Out the Gap album, which also featured melodic music over the reggae bass lines. Many of the songs are intimately written, such as “My Little One,” about having children, or “Love You Mad.” There’s also a worldly peace and justice theme on songs such as “Chief of a Nation,” or the last song, “Walk Humbly Now,” with Maxwell coaxing listeners, “Don’t be overwhelmed by the grief of the world.” My personal favorite, “Working For The Man,” sums up the feel of the album with lyrics of solidarity and music that can’t be defined much by any one genre, but could be enjoyed by fans of any type of music.

Also playing on the album is Maxwell’s father (“Papa Maxwell” in the liner notes) on drums and percussion.
