LIKE PIONEERS – Oh, Magic

Oh, MagicThe groove-oriented rock music and thoughtful, introspective lyrics of Oh, Magic make for an entertaining 35 minutes. The album reminds me a bit of several bands, as three vocalists add to the various sounds cascading into the forefront of the album. “All Wrapped” is reminiscent of Built To Spill’s first album, while “Good Neighbor Policy” brings to mind Real Estate’s spacey minimalism. “Boggs” is a simple pop-rock song with a catchy, Pixies-ish riff, and while this is easily the most enjoyable and accessible track, accessibility isn’t really an issue with this type of indie pop. The sound is generally inoffensive, yet the real challenge is for it to capture enough attention. In a concert setting, this music would sound phenomenal.  Otherwise, however, it has the potential to blend into the background. It’s a shame because Like Pioneers deserve your attention.
