Leland Cobain, Kurt’s Grandfather, Dies at Age 89

Thursday, May 30th, 2013

Leland Cobain holds up a Kurt Cobain Memorial Foundation bumpersticker before a foundation fundraiser concert at the 7th Street Theater in Hoquiam in 2007.

Leland Cobain, the grandfather of late Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain, died at the age of 89 in Montesano, Washington on May 29, 2013. Leland Cobain was a huge fan of his grandson, and according to a Seattle Weekly feature in 2010, he kept a shrine to Kurt in his double trailer. The elder Cobain was one of the few surviving members of Cobain’s family willing to speak about the late rocker and corresponded with fans from around the world about his grandson. (via Noisecreep)

Cobain kept the hundreds, if not thousands, of letters received from fans, and answered many of them. He loved visitors, and was always willing to speak with them if they sought him. When Kurt Cobain’s supporters wanted to honor his memory in his hometown and formed the nonprofit Kurt Cobain Memorial Foundation, Leland Cobain offered his name and his energy to help.
