I like the fact that I get to review this four-song demo, not only because it’s good music, but also because it is so different from everything else I get to review. Currently residing in Connecticut, Chilean-born musicians Cesar Zuniga, Fedor Urrutia, Rodrigo Ibarra, and Gerardo Zuniga have created a unique sound, drawing from a wide variety of influences, both stylistically and regionally. The four songs on this demo all have Spanish lyrics, though the band has many English songs that will be included on a future full-length recording. However, English or Spanish, there is no way to simply categorize Latin-ka’s music. Yes, there are strong elements of traditional Spanish rock—like Santana—but within this short demo, elements of classic American rock, reminiscent of Pink Floyd and even Blue Oyster Cult, can be found as well. Surprising traces of alternative, punk rock, and heavier, distorted metal can catch the listener off-guard, and the fact that such an array of influences can exist on one demo album is a testament to the potentially wide appeal Latin-ka possesses.
