KURT VILE – Wakin’ On a Pretty Daze

Kurt Vile "Wakin on a Pretty Daze" album coverWe’ve all got a friend who has an aura of what-the-fuck-ever, slack-ass laziness.

And they get smoked out every 20 minutes like clockwork.

Kurt Vile may give that surface impression to the casual listener, but a beautiful (albeit slow-moving) modern-day Zen practitioner with a few Beck and Ween CDs exists on this 11-track album.

Vile examines everything with an all-encompassing, smirking, cough syrup gaze. It’s not whether he’ll get you to your place on time. He just knows that he’ll get you there, and gives you a matching, warm, and slow head-nodding soundtrack full of solid songs and a knowing grin. Vile reveals his self dead on with the lines: “I’m diggin’ layin’ low, low, low/Dig, dig in, to these lives that we are livin’/Livin’ low, lackadaisically so,” from the opener “Wakin On A Pretty Day”…which is almost the title of the disc.

But, eh, it’s okay, y’know?
