The Joe Strummer memorial mural wall in New York City

As reported by numerous outlets, the famous Joe Stummer memorial mural located on the wall of the Niagara, a bar in East Village in New York City since 2003, has been removed. The building where it appeared, at the corner of East 7th Street and Avenue A, is being renovated, and workers destroyed it on Monday.

However, there is some good news: according to The Clash Blog, the owner of the Niagara, Jesse Malin, is a big fan of Strummer, and tweeted that the mural will return soon: “Joe Will be back on the niagara ( east 7 th st.wall) in the EV NYC. In a few weeks Rastas !”

While the Strummer mural is certainly one of the oldest (and most iconic) tributes to the former Clash front man, it’s not the last:  Strummer is to be honored with a square in the Spanish city of Granada named after him.
