GabelThough a couple weeks old at this point, RS published an interesting interview with contributing editor Josh Eells, the writer who interviewed the lead vocalist of Against Me! for the May 11th issue of Rolling Stone. In the interview, Tom Gabel came out as trans and revealed her intent to begin living as Laura Jane Grace, as well as frankly discussing her relationships with family members and the years of struggling with gender dysphoria.

At this point, if you’ve read the interview Gabel but not this piece with Eells, it serves as an interesting postscript. Eells details his history with Gabel, as well as some of the immediate questions that many Against Me! fans may have had:

Why come out in such a big way?

“I’m not sure why she wanted to do it in exactly this way, but I think she wanted to not have a thousand conversations with people. This was a way to push herself a little.”

Is she worried it will affect her career and singing voice?

She’s hopeful that the percentage of fans that won’t be cool with this will be small…So far the only kind of medical thing she’s having done is hormones. She says the estrogen doesn’t affect your voice. If she goes ahead with some of the cosmetic things – like tracheal shaving, which whittles down your Adam’s apple – there’s a possibility that might affect her voice. But she’s really hesitant to do that because of that. As of right now, she should sound the same, as loud and aggro and awesome as ever, just as a woman.
