INSECTS VS. ROBOTS – Geryl and the Great Homunculus

reviewed by James Yates | Friday, July 9th, 2010

Insects Vs. Robots make it a lot easier to like them than it could have been. Their 10-minute-plus psychedelic jams could be the very worst type of music. While the track listing contains four pieces, there appear much more. Within each song, so many alterations occur that it feels instead like a callback to a time where you didn’t check the runtime constantly, wondering when the switch occurs.

There is immense talent contained within the group as well. Take a sample from any of the first three tracks and you’ll see that these are not time-wasting musicians. There is reason and rhyme to the build. There is a bizarre sense to the Middle Eastern indulgence in the middle of “Fire in the Sky.” Despite the fact that this is, without a doubt, self indulgent music, it washes over you and takes residence. Unassuming at first, moments sneak by to surprise you with their excitement and quality.

You have to like the genre. You need to already be swayed by the potential validity of psychedelic jam rock. If you are, though, I’m not sure anyone out there is doing it quite like this — it’s just so enjoyable. It’s forward-thinking while also largely occupying a space of nostalgia — of a musical sound from days gone by.
