I WAS A KING – Old Friends

Riding on the tailcoats of indie pop songsters Sufjan Stevens and Apples in Stereo, I Was A King’s latest release delivers nothing less than melodic genius. Full of ’60s pop-inspired tunes such as “Echoes” and “Snow Song,” I Was A King’s full-bodied instrumentation and experimental intros and interludes gives what could have been a group of straightforward pop songs the depth that makes good albums great. Featuring a strong lineup of candy-like organs, fuzzy guitars, and a boisterous array of brass and strings littered throughout, the well-crafted songwriting of Frode Strømstad shines through supported by a backbone of whimsical beats and fills.

Focusing the album’s lyrical content around the theme of friendship, Old Friends maintains an air of love and kindness throughout, exploring the mystery of the deep bonds that we form with each other throughout our lives.  A perfect album for the winter months ahead, these songs are like cozy blankets to wrap around your ears, reminiscent of spring’s forthcoming warmth.
