Because I respect your time, I’ll first let you read a random sampling of lyrics from this album, and from there you can decide if you’d care to venture any further. Here we go:
“Saw her dancing with Doug and I thought he’s gay/Then I heard she gave him an H.J./I love the way her skirt shows off her butt/It gets me so hot to think she’s such a slut.” –from “That Ho”

“Said you’d hang out Wednesday but then your aunt called/Said you’d hang out Thursday but then your dog got ill/We doing brunch on Sunday? Let’s reschedule?/I write my plans in ink, but guess who uses pencil.” -from “Cancel”
“I’m sorry that I took your best friend…dancing while you were away/I’m sorry we didn’t do nothing nice, nothing nice on your birthday/It wasn’t my intention to cause you any pain/I’m overcome with tenderness when your world is filled with rain.” -from “Pretty”
Yes. I know how you feel. My first thought was, Did I just listen to the result of some drunken bet? It’s the only logical explanation. Something like, “Bro, bro! I’ll bet you this case of beef-flavored ramen that you can’t record an album of high-school themed party songs with seemingly improvised lyrics and get some poor sap to listen to the whole thing for the purpose of writing a review.”
The lyrics seem like they were pulled from the dumpster outside the studios of The Lonely Planet and Flight of the Conchords. The music, however, is decent: high production value, some funky beats, and surprisingly sophisticated instrumentation. Typically, a successful combination of these elements keeps me optimistic through the first listen, regardless of what’s actually being sung. In fact, it’s downright tragic that some decent tracks were wasted underneath the juvenile ramblings of these self-indulgent whiners. I guess this imbalance should be expected considering Girl Problems is made up of Charles Goodan (a Grammy-winning producer) and front man Nick Weber (a painter). So unless you’re a Cake fan who was always annoyed by John McCrea’s thoughtful wit and wordplay, you might want to skip this one. Seriously, Girl Problems, check your heads.
