Calling Brooklyn, New York home these days, rock group Fang Island have unleashed their sophomore album of guitar-driven indie rock. After their self-titled debut delivered a collection of catchy hooks and thunderous rhythms, anticipation was high for their follow up, Major.

Unfortunately, their latest album does not quite live up to their previous work. While Fang Island consisted of 10 songs of bad ass rock music, Major is hit or miss. Keeping up their rocking tradition are tunes like “Seek It Out,” which delivers classic guitar riffs and singalong lyrics, and “Chompers,” an instrumental playground for rapid-fire guitar playing. The song “Sisterly” is everything that is right about Major. It draws the listener in with crunchy guitars before assaulting them with thumping rhythms and melodic vocals.

However, for every great tune there is an alternate mediocre track. The opening tune “Kindergarten” cannot decide what it wants to be. A chaotic mix of guitars and keyboards, the different sounds step all over each other while the vocals sound out of place. “Never Understand” never comes together, and I am not really sure where they were going with “Victorinian.” Fang Island’s latest is a nice listen — it just does not live up to expectations. Maybe if they delivered a few more tunes like “Asunder” and a few less that make you want to hit the skip button it would have made for a better listen.
