V/A – Equal Vision Records Fall Sampler 2001

EVROriginally published in Verbicide issue #5

Bane, “Ante Up”: Tight backing vocals, but it sounds like his voice is going to shit, as compared to the Forked Tongue seven-inch, which is the first (besides the Superbowl Show in Buffalo) and last time I listened to this band. It’s not that bad, though.

Liars Academy, “Kamikaze”: Radio-branded pop rock.

Burn, “Decay”: This is definitely not the style of hardcore that I like. Skip.

Rocking Horse Winner, “Elementary”: Wins the award for worst band name ever. Nasally female vocals. Poppy emo crap.

Coheed and Cambria, “Delirium Trigger”: This one is hard for me to put my finger on… it’s like if you put a Tool seven-inch on the wrong speed, or something. I don’t know if I hate it or not. I can see it being pretty catchy, but…something bothers me about it. Eh, I give up.

Prevent Falls, “As the Crowd Fades”: Yikes. If you’re going to sing for a band, make sure that you can stay in pitch. The production is terrible, and the mixing is really weird.

Converge, “Homewrecker”: I don’t like this band, so I won’t review the song. You either hate or love metal screamo. I hate it. This band should have quit in ’95.
