DRUNK DAD – Ripper Killer

Drunk Dad "Ripper Killer"The Eolian Empire label was relaunched a few years back with the sole intention of chronicling all that is loud, heavy, and weird in Portland,Oregon. It has introduced the world to some of the wildest and woolliest sounds its hometown has to offer, and that continues with the release of the debut full-length from Drunk Dad.

This isn’t the band’s first release for the label: their debut EP Morbid Reality came out in 2013 and introduced the world to the band’s gloriously messed up and self-proclaimed “fuck you all”-wave style of music, which basically means they take the best parts of hardcore, noise rock, and grunge and combine it into gloriously filthy sound. This isn’t the sound of the Portland of Portlandia — this is the sound of the town that was the inspiration for Drugstore Cowboy and gave the world a band like Poison Idea.

On Ripper Killer, Drunk Dad more than live up to the promise of their debut EP, pushing their sound into new and disturbing directions. In addition, they are joined by local harsh noise artist (and fellow Eolian label-mate) REDNECK, who adds an extra layer of sonic violence to each track.

“Six Pack” opens with the crackling feedback of an amp pushed to its limit before it explodes into some noisy, messed-up hardcore punk. “Life’s Work” begins with a chunky noise riff, goes fast, and then throws some short, sharp and shocking feedback-laden guitar solos to the mix. “Fuck In Garbage” starts slow and builds to a fast pace, kind of mimicking the seedy act described in its title. The title track is seven minutes of catchy noisecore that goes fast, slow, and everywhere in between. “Whiskey Liver” ends the album on a punishing note.

Ripper Killer marks the arrival of a major new talent on the outskirts of the loud rock scene. These seasoned musicians, play like their lives depended on it, and it shows in a album that is equal parts shocking, thrilling, and kick ass.
