Gorillaz Collaborators Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett Bringing “Monkey: Journey to the West” Opera to New York City

Monkey: Journey to the West

Monkey: Journey to the West, a musical theater production by Gorillaz partners Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett and director Chen Shi-Zheng, will travel to New York City, with a series of performances this summer. The New York production will be staged 27 times from July 6-28 at the David H. Koch Theater.

Albarn composed the score, Hewlett did design, animation, and costumes, and Chen Shi-Zheng came up with the concept, wrote the libretto, and directs the production. The 100-minute show is based on a Chinese folktale about a monk on a journey from China to India, in search of sacred Buddhist scriptures. The monk is led by the Monkey King, accompanied by several animal friends. The trailer is below.
