Comic Wow bridges the gap between spacy pop bands like Apples in Stereo and Flaming Lips with the instrumental synths of Tangerine Dream and the modern beat-making of Daft Punk. The album builds a solid groove and follows through with it throughout the album. The whole feel is ’60s psychedelia crossed up with…well…whatever Comic Wow feels like throwing into the mix. The first few tracks have a bit of an easy bluegrass vibe that slowly blends its way into a sort of cabaret feel with “Nice Chaps.” That vibe soon gives way to an epic flute solo in “Encore Electronics Flute Fax” and the stunning “Minor Hexagons.” This is an oddball of an experimental album that works. Yes, it’s strange. Sure, it feels like you’re flying through an astrological rainbow of feelings and colors. But enjoy this album for what it is: a brilliant piece of experimental atmospheric electronic pop.
