BLOOD CEREMONY – Living With The Ancients

These self-proclaimed “witch-rockers” return with a second album that builds and improves on their self-titled debut. The riffs are punchier, the songwriting has improved, the vocals are stronger, and the production by Sanford Parker is spot on. The band has basically taken all that made the first record so good and just went the extra mile to avoid the dreaded sophomore slump.

Launching into album opener “The Great God Pan” one can see all the improvements right off the bat. Witchy vocalist Alia O’Brien’s singing has become more smooth and melodic, enticing the listener to join in on her arcane rituals. Guitarist Sean Kennedy’s riffs are punchier and his solos more intricate and trippy. The rhythm section of Andrew Haust (drums) and Lucas Gadke (bass) give the bottom end a thorough groove-laden workout, infusing the songs with a solid and swinging bottom end. From there, the band just lays down a heavy sound, paying tribute to the elder gods of doom while forging their own path. It’s quite the feat.

Once again, O’Brien’s flute playing helps add to the band’s otherworldly vibe, evoking arcane rituals of spirituality. Some might say she sounds a little like Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, but I wouldn’t go there — this is something deeper and more mystical.

In the last few years, there have been a lot of these occult based heavy metal bands coming out of the woodwork. Blood Ceremony has been ahead of this trend and it shows in the magical and enticing sounds found within the record. There is a reason label mates Electric Wizard picked them to open up for them a few years ago, and the fact that they will soon be starting a European tour with labelmates and critics darling Ghost seals their credentials. Even though, I think it’s high time that Rise Above gets some of these bands over here to tour. Our European brothers and sisters are getting spoiled with all these awesome sounds, while we are left starving.

Still, it doesn’t take anything away from this record. The band has really stepped up to the plate and delivered another enticing platter of witchy-doom, sure to enthrall everyone from the novice to the expert. Don’t miss out.
