Greg Ginn and Mike Vallely

What a year 2013 was for Greg Ginn and Black Flag. First they reformed the band with Ron Reyes on vocals, released a critically panned album, lost a trademark lawsuit to FLAG, and then fired Ron Reyes mid-show…just like the old days.

But it’s not over yet.  Mike Vallely, who Reyes described as staring him down and taking his mic mid-set during the last Black Flag show in November 2013, will be the new Black Flag vocalist.

In a Rolling Stone interview, Vallely says that things will be different going forward: “We feel that, generally, the band fell short in 2013 because of a difference in the philosophies of Ron and Greg — it just led to dysfunction… It could have been better. [Black Flag] can be a stronger, more cohesive, tighter band. We want to prove that.

“Greg just felt like, ’I don’t want the Black Flag name to fizzle out with this or be tainted with this record that’s proven to be subpar compared to what the expectations for it were.’ He told me he made a mistake by working with Ron and trying to pander to a sort of old-school thing. He just thought that I was the guy for the job… I’m not gonna say no to that.”

Ginn and Vallely already play together in Good For You, which, in 2013, was essentially the exact same band as Black Flag, except with Vallely on vocals.
