The Action Swingers fit into their own little niche in the history of underground rock. They merged the fuzz and misanthropy of garage punk with the speed and attack of hardcore to form a speedy hybrid that was exciting and quite nasty.
The band, with main-man Ned Hayden, has had many underground rock luminaries filter through their ranks: Julie Cafritz (Pussy Galore), J. Mascis, Pete Shore (Unsane), Bob Bert (Sonic Youth), Howie Pyro (A-Bones, D’Generation) and Johan Kugelberg. But no matter who is backing Hayden, they always deliver the high impact and high-action punk rock goods.

However, the always awesome Total Punk label put out an old single of theirs, “Miserable Life/Losing My Cool,” in 2013 to great acclaim. Hayden repaid the favor by putting together another line-up of the band, which included members of the Gary Wrong Group and the Manatees, and played the label’s recent Total Fuck Off II fest in Florida.
In The Red has just put out a vinyl reissue of the band’s 1994 album, which collects their first two singles as well as a bunch of unreleased tracks along with the album proper, in order to keep the momentum going.
This one is a scorcher. The album features Hayden and Cafritz along with drummers Mascis, Don Fleming, and Kugelberg. The guitars spit out corrosive feedback drenched riffs, while the many different rhythm sections lay down some raunchy, nasty grooves and Hayden’s venomous spew sits like a rancid cherry on top of this glorious mess of sound. You’ll want a shower after listening to this.
There are rumors of Hayden putting together another version of the band and recording a new album when he can find the right people. Until then, you have this to remind you of their greatness.
