“20 Questions With Verbicide” is an interview series in which an artist is handed a list of more than 100 questions and they select 20 from the list they would like to answer.
Adult Books are on a spring 2016 US tour supporting their debut album, Running From the Blows, released via Lollipop Records on March 4, 2016. They hit SXSW to play a ton of shows, and Verbicide caught up with Nick Winfrey of the band for a quick “20 Questions With Verbicide” interview.

What is your favorite musical act of the 1920s?
The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers. I think they were both discovered at the same open-call audition in the late 1920s, which is crazy because the two of them more or less founded the basis of country music as we know it.

Did you prefer life prior to the internet and cell phones and social media, or do you think we’re better for it?
Honestly, I think we’re better for it. Like, how did anyone tour before smart phones and social media? I’m not only talking the logistics of setting up shows and getting directions, but also, what else am I gonna do on a six-hour drive besides play on my phone? Cell phones saved rock ‘n roll.
Where is your ideal vacation spot?
I’ve never been, but lately I’ve really been wanting to go to the Caribbean. Also, I’ve done some research on these extreme hotels where you stay in glass igloos in the Arctic. That sounds fun too.
What is your favorite holiday?
Christmas. Presents, Christmas trees, and snow are all things that I like. Except we don’t get snow in LA. But I like the idea.
What is your absolute oldest memory?
When I was maybe two my family’s apartment caught on fire and all these firetrucks and policemen came. I sat in the back of a police car with my mom, with a dinosaur blanket over my head. I can still see the way the firetruck lights look through the blanket. It’s kinda weirdly comforting looking back.
E-reader or paper books, which do you prefer?
Paper books forever! Just like vinyl, paper books are so much more of an experience. I like the smell and the feel, and the feeling of owning something physical rather than an intangible computer file.

Dive bar, duh. I hate coffee, and who hangs out at drugstores?
Surfing or snowboarding?
Surfing. We were lucky enough to grow up by the beach, so for us, we could go surfing for a couple hours in the morning and still have a full day. Snowboarding is such an ordeal to me. You get all hot and sweaty and sunburned, and nothing is worse than the drive back after a long day in the mountains.
What is your favorite breakfast cereal?
Oh, this is a tough one, because I love cereal, but it’s a four-way tie between Lucky Charms, Honeycomb, Reese’s Puffs, and Oh’s.

Do you believe in magic?
I don’t believe in God or angels or voodoo or things like that, but life is pretty cool, so that’s magic enough for me.
