Teasing fans with a taste of what’s to come on their upcoming album, Night Birds deliver a short burst of surf punk rock goodness on the seven-inch Maimed For The Masses. The record contains four tunes that are fast, loud, rowdy, and nonsensical — everything you could ask for from a band that doesn’t take themselves too seriously.
The title track, “Maimed For The Masses,” is the focus of this brief entry into their catalog. Clocking in at just over three minutes, this tune is an opus compared to the other tracks. Driven by blistering guitars it is a loud, fast-paced song about pro wrestler Mick Foley and how he has made a career out of destroying his body for the joy of his fans. It is a fitting tribute to Foley.

This track is bundled with a trio of b-sides that are all short, sweet, and to the point. I am pretty sure the band members simply want to see how fast they can play the song “Barred Out,” and with “Last Gasp” the traditional surf guitar makes its first true appearance on the record. They close things out with “Boat Trash,” which would make Dick Dale proud. Mainly an instrumental, it is full of catchy guitar riffs as they randomly utter “boat trash” much like the song “Tequila” from The Champs. It is a fitting close to this record.
Maimed For The Masses is short, but oh so sweet. It is a fun listen with songs that will still be rattling around your head long after you have stopped listening to it.
