Fresh Fruit Vol. 1 is a misleading title as there are not any progressive or genre-bending tracks on the compilation. Most of the songs are very repetitive and uninspiring. As hard as it may be to say, the most fun and original tracks on the album are the ones that would appeal to 13-year-old boys and girls who are just getting into the bubblegum pop-punk scene and don’t know who Her Space Holiday or HelloGoodbye are yet.
Most of the other tracks fall into a tasteless realm of “dad rock” that sounds like a The Hold Steady cover band that is trying too hard. If you want to hear some real rock from Canada play some Rush, Wolfparade, or the Unicorns, as all are more creative than the bands on this compilation.
